September 19 Payap Life Long Learning presents Excursion to Nirotharam Bhikkhuni Arama DELAYED FROM AUGUST 14 – 8.30am – 3.30pm - In Buddhism, a Bhikkhuni is a fully ordained female monk. According to a survey by the Vijja Bhikkhuni Aramaya Centre, there are at least 173 bhikkhuni, 50 samaneri (novices), and 23 sikhamana (women who are observing religious practices at the temple to prepare themselves for ordination) in 60 bhikkhuni centres across the country. Of these, Nirotharam (meaning “a place to end suffering”) Bhikkhuni Arama in Chom Thong, about 60 km south of Chiang Mai city, is the largest. Our visit to to Nirotharam Bhikkhuni Arama will include a guided tour of the premises, a talk by one of the English speaking Bhikkhuni followed by a Q & A session, a short guided meditation, and a vegetarian lunch. Phu earned his Bachelor’s degree in Piano Performance from HEMU Haute École de Musique (University of Music Lausanne), where he studied with J.F. Antonioli and R. Castro, and received chamber music coaching from Vincent Coq. He went on to study his Master’s degree at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music under the tutelage of P. Paleczny and K. Jankowska. He has performed across Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Poland, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Hungary, and Russia. Phu made his debut in Bangkok in 2010 with a landmark performance of Chopin’s complete 24 Études — a feat still unmatched by any other Thai pianist.
