August 2 - 3 Chiang Mai Birders - Chiang Dao The area around Malee’s Nature Lovers Bungalows and Wat Tham Pha Plong in Chiang Dao offers easy access to the forest birds of Northern Thailand amid spectacular mountain views. eBird lists an impressive 374 species reported in and around the temple grounds! We will travel to Malee’s on Saturday afternoon. After check-in, we’ll spend a couple of hours birding around the bungalows and the temple. On Sunday, we’ll bird from early morning until around 11:00 AM, with a break for the included breakfast at Malee’s. Expect a gentle walk of 1–2 km along a flat, paved road. Anyone who wishes may climb the 500 steps to the upper temple for a panoramic view of the canopy and surrounding mountains. We’ll return to Chiang Mai in the mid-afternoon on Sunday. According to a survey by the Vijja Bhikkhuni Aramaya Centre, there are at least 173 bhikkhuni, 50 samaneri (novices), and 23 sikhamana (women who are observing religious practices at the temple to prepare themselves for ordination) in 60 bhikkhuni centres across the country. Of these, Nirotharam (meaning “a place to end suffering”) Bhikkhuni Arama in Chom Thong, about 60 km south of Chiang Mai city, is the largest. Our visit to to Nirotharam Bhikkhuni Arama will include a guided tour of the premises, a talk by one of the English speaking Bhikkhuni followed by a Q & A session, a short guided meditation, and a vegetarian lunch.
